Talk 'n' Coffee Under New Management

Scott Sanders at Talk 'n' Coffee

It was love at first sight, as Scott Sanders put it, when he first walked in to Talk 'n' Coffee in downtown Colville. He liked everything about the place: the coffee, the atmosphere, the clientele. So he bought it, taking over operations from the coffee shop's founder, Steve Lecture, who has left the area for a sojourn on the Wet Side.

Scott brings lots of energy to the task, and has a few new ideas for the business, but he explained that his first priority is to offer the same fine quality coffee that Talk 'n' Coffee is known for. Scott joked about his training with Lecture, whom he calls "The Master," then turned serious to explain that he respects the former owner's commitment to quality and endeavors to do the same. He wouldn't reveal any of the company secrets that Lecture passed along to him over the past few weeks, but Lecture told me before he left that Scott understands that it's better to pour mediocre espresso down the drain than to serve it to customers, and that Sanders now knows the difference between good and excellent coffee. And viva la diffÈrence! For great coffee is as important to some of us as fresh air, clean water and organic, locally grown produce.

As for changes, Sanders only wants to build on the community spirit that is already present at Talk 'n' Coffee, a place known for its broad customer mix where coffee and tea lovers can have a civil conversation about whatever concerns them and meet a variety of interesting and thoughtful people.

Sanders' plan is to sponsor coffeehouses that extend the social aspect of the shop into the evenings. Music perhaps? An open mic? It's all being considered. Keep your eye on The Monthly for further details once Scott has had time to flesh out his plans. We'll publish his schedule in What's Happening.

In the meantime, stop by for a chat and a cup of really good coffee or tea. You'll find Scott a welcoming host who does honor to the lessons he learned from The Master.

The North Columbia Monthly provides news, views, humor and a calendar of events for an area that stretches from Nelson in British Columbia south to Spokane in Washington State and covers all points in between. A free (and free-thinking, progressive) magazine, The Monthly is available at several hundred spots throughout the region and now is also available on-line at www.ncmonthly.com. Published once a month since 1994, The Monthly is an independent magazine that often challenges contemporary wisdom by encouraging critical thinking about issues and attitudes in the region and beyond.

Featuring our one-of-a-kind "What's Happening" department, The Monthly provides the region's only all-inclusive, free listing of community events and is the first place many people check to find out about area arts, crafts, music, fairs, services and events of all kinds. Our free listing policy for the "What's Happening" department promotes diversity, cultural interaction, and the exchange of ideas and free expression. Also featured in the magazine are people, food, health, humor, and feature articles that keep readers coming back for more each month.
