Writers and Photographers Wanted
If you have outdoor experience in the Inland Northwest or Southern Interior B.C. and can write and/or take quality outdoor photographs, we need you. We are soliciting article proposals for upcoming issues and welcome your ideas. We need short feature articles on just about any aspect of non-motorized recreation in the area. We are willing to work with freelance writers/photographers with any level of experience, including first-timers, as long as the writing/photography is fresh and inviting. Please keep in mind that deadlines and sticking to an agreed-upon article length are important in magazine publishing. Please contact us with your ideas. Article Guidelines for North Columbia Recreation
We want to encourage readers to get out there and do it! To that end, we're looking for writers who have experience in the subjects they write about who can narrate with enthusiasm and spark the story of an actual trip they'd recommend to others so that readers get a real feel for the experience. A basic trail guide tells readers where to go to do a certain activity and how to get there. We want to fill in that basic outline with the "why do it" by putting people in the picture and describing their experience. What did they see? How did they feel? What about the experience makes them want to recommend it in the first place? This approach opens the door to much more personal, perhaps emotional or philosophical, questions about the activity you're writing about. We can include the directions on how to get there in a sidebar, but want the articles to focus on the people in the landscape. North Columbia Recreation will focus on human-powered (and animal-powered) recreation, rather than motorized recreation. When appropriate, articles may suggest ways to be respectful of the landscape and of other outdoor enthusiasts, but we're not here to push an environmental agenda. Though personally we lean green, we feel that experience in the landscape is more likely to encourage environmentalism than someone shouting from a pedestal. We're pitching our magazine to a general audience that already has an interest in outdoor recreation (which is why they will pick us up to start with), but we can't assume they have previous experience or are already familiar with the territory. We hope that our audience will include readers of all ages, from teens to elders. We are not trying to write tips for experts. Experts can get technical information they need elsewhere. Style
Familiarity with standard style manuals is a plus. We use "The Chicago Manual of Style" and "The Associated Press Stylebook" as our guide. For more information, or to pitch an idea, please contact us at the address below. Steve Rumsey, Editor/Publisher North Columbia Recreation |
