Highlights of the May 2008 Issue

boundaries Collecting Culture, by Jack Nisbet

The 1900 Washington State census lists William Morley Manning as a 23-year-old assayer in Stevens County. Manning had been born in Ontario, Canada, but by 1897, at the tender age of 20, he had filed U.S. citizenship papers in Idaho County, Idaho. The following year he enrolled in the University of Toronto's program for mining engineers, although there is no evidence that he ever received any kind of degree.

Maury Barr's

on the rocks Field Trip to Vulcan Mountain, by Leopold Hayden Powell

The first two weekends of May are the time to enjoy the south face of Vulcan Mountain, with your discovery 4-H Club. 4-H clubs are like good books or maps, in that they open opportunity panoramas, not obvious at first glance. You might think of 4-H in terms of livestock or home economics activities, for farm children. They are far more than that. 4-H SET -- Science, Engineering and Technology -- is the connection to recreational science, in the outdoors. The natural science emphasis of the Discovery Project is the gateway to whatever families can imagine. Children, five to eight years old, participate in the non-competitive activities. Youth, nine to nineteen, are eligible for all activities. Anyone, twenty and over, may be leaders. The County office of the WSU Extension has all the information and assistance. Leaders must have a background check and attend a training session, some time in the first year. Members and leaders have access to the Extension resources and are covered by liability insurance.

Maury Barr's poetry collection, Bone Music, is now available.

The North Columbia Monthly provides news, views, humor and a calendar of events for an area that stretches from Southern British Columbia south to Spokane in Washington State and covers all points in between. A free (and free-thinking, progressive) magazine, The Monthly is available at several hundred spots throughout the region and now is also available on-line at www.ncmonthly.com. Published once a month since 1994, The Monthly is an independent magazine that often challenges contemporary wisdom by encouraging critical thinking about issues and attitudes in the region and beyond.

Featuring our one-of-a-kind "What's Happening" department, The Monthly provides the region's only all-inclusive, free listing of community events and is the first place many people check to find out about area arts, crafts, music, fairs, services and events of all kinds. Our open listing policy for the "What's Happening" department promotes diversity, cultural interaction, and the exchange of ideas and free expression. Also featured in the magazine are people, food, health, humor, and feature articles that keep readers coming back for more each month.

We can be reached by mail at The North Columbia Monthly, PO Box 541, Colville, WA 99114; by phone or fax at 509-684-3109; by email at editor@ncmonthly.com; and on the Web at www.ncmonthly.com.
